Tliltocatl vagans, formerly known as Brachypelma vagans, is a captivating species of tarantula native to Mexico, specifically the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca, it is commonly referred to as the “Mexican Red Rump” or “Red Rump Tarantula.”

One of the distinguishing features of Tliltocatl vagans is its striking coloration. The tarantula showcases a dark black or deep brown body, while the abdomen exhibits vibrant red hairs, which give rise to its common name. This color contrast creates a visually stunning appearance, they also
 have a robust build, with a stocky body and thick legs that contribute to their powerful appearance.

Tliltocatl vagans is primarily a ground-dwelling species, creating burrows or utilizing natural crevices for shelter and security. These burrows serve as a safe haven where the tarantula can seek refuge and molt, as well as a space for mating and laying eggs. The tarantula exhibits nocturnal behavior, venturing out of its burrow during the night to hunt for prey and explore its surroundings.

As an ambush predator, Tliltocatl vagans waits patiently inside or near its burrow for unsuspecting prey to pass by. Once the prey is within striking range, the tarantula swiftly captures it using its strong legs and injects venom to immobilize and subdue the victim. Their diet mainly consists of insects and other small invertebrates found in their natural habitat.

In terms of temperament, Tliltocatl vagans is generally considered to be a docile species. They are known for their calm and non-aggressive behavior, making them suitable for tarantula enthusiasts of various experience levels. However, as with any tarantula, individual temperament can vary, and caution should be exercised when handling to avoid causing stress or harm to the spider.

Females: 25 years, males: 5 years.

Up to 16,5cm.

Husbandry:
Keep at 70-80% humidity and 21-28°C for temperature, use a mix of peat moss and vermiculite.

Enclosure Size:
5-10 cm for spiderlings, 15-20 cm for juveniles, and 30*30*30 cm or more for adults.
